It is possible to use request variables in "WHERE" clause of SQL query. Request variables are used in the following format:

{$REQUEST:VAR_NAME}

Where VAR_NAME is a name of request variable. For example if you want to use "city" request variable in SQL query, query will look like:

SELECT
*
FROM
tbl
WHERE
user_city = {$REQUEST:city}

For your case you can create a A - z links outside the module and send selected letter as a request variables and use it in "WHERE" clause of your SQL query.
