There is no $REQUEST in my case. Pages are always of the form like this;

I get your idea on custom plugin. Any chance you guys build that in to Data Tables? I am sure other customers will need/use that feature.

SEF links are transformed to standard links by Joomla! before handling a request so {$REQUEST:id} will contain ID of currently loaded article. Link to an article looks like index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=ARTICLEID
