Hi,

I am trying to get a google doc visible in my website.

The document is set to public. I have inserted it into an article with the plugin code, and it is surrounded by a div.

On my page, it first shows a message:

Sorry, we are unable to retrieve the document for viewing.... try to download the original document by clicking here.

and when I click here, the document appears perfectly fine within the site.

why is it unable to retrieve it at first and able to get it on clicking here?

(inserted an image, where you can see it)

Could you copy and insert plugin code to forum message so we can check it on our test server?

The link which you use is not a link to a document (Excel, PDF or other document type). This link to a Google web application which shows a spreadsheet.
