I tried many ways to do so, but failed

Try the following CSS rule:

UL.ux-menu UL.ux-menu-sub
{
background: transparent url(LINK_TO_BGIMAGE) no-repeat left bottom;
}

Where LINK_TO_BGIMAGE is a link to a background image.
