I want to click a link or image and go directly to the lightbox gallery instead of opening the gallery page first

so how do I link to a lightbox gallery ?

The plugin doesn't create a gallery, it can attach the lightbox to existing image galleries which are created via WordPress native gallery, NextGEN, JIG or other plugin.

I understand that.
I already have the plugin installed and I am using default WP gallery

What I am not grasping is how to open directly into a lightbox from a link.

when I am in the gallery I can click on an image and it opens the gallery in a lightbox
what i want is to open that lightbox without having to go to that gallery page

It is not possible. The plugin uses image from the current page.

I am pretty sure that what you mean is that you want the deeplink to work - meanig that the link of the image that is created within the plugin leads back to the actual lightbox view, other than the page with all the images.

I have the same problem - the deeplink is not showing me the specific image.
For example I pick one image from within the lightbox, I copy the link and if I open it in another tab I should be taken back to the lightbox view, right... well it doesn't happen - here is an example

It looks like a problem with 3rd party plugin. Probably with limb-gallery. Share link is modified by 3rd party plugin so the lightbox is not opened. You can see that extra / is added after ! symbol when try to open the link into a browser.
