"Slices" parameter is used to specify number of slices which will be used by transition effect, but not all effects use slice, some of them use "Box rows" and "Box cols" parameters. "Fade" effect for example uses only one slice. "ARI Image Slider" is based on NivoSlider jQuery plugin and you can find this information on NivoSlider page.

Could you explain what do you mean under "what is the correct term for a link by mouse click on the slider?"?
